Resinoids: Origin, Composition, and Applications
Resins are produced in specialized structures within plants, commonly referred to as resin ducts or resin passages. These substances may exude or ooze from the bark or wood of trees and typically harden when exposed to air.
When resinous material is extracted using a suitable solvent, the resulting viscous, aromatic extract is known as a resinoid. Resinoids are valued for their rich aroma and are widely used in perfumery, aromatherapy, and fragrance applications.
Important resin- and resinoid-producing plants are found primarily in families such as Pinaceae, Burseraceae, Anacardiaceae, Leguminosae, and Hamamelidaceae.
Resinoids are natural metabolic products of plant tissues. They may be produced as part of the plant's normal physiological processes or in response to injury, disease, or damage to the bark and wood.
After refinement, resinoids are generally lighter in color, less sticky, and highly aromatic. Their excellent fragrance characteristics and fixative properties make them particularly valuable in perfumery and aromatherapy.

Typical Composition of Resinoids
Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis indicates that resinoids may contain a complex mixture of hydrocarbon and terpenoid compounds. A typical composition includes:
- Aliphatic hydrocarbons: approximately 55–70%
- Diterpenes: approximately 10–20%
- Triterpenes: approximately 5–7%
The exact composition varies considerably depending on the botanical source, plant part, extraction method, geographic origin, and degree of refinement.
